Last year I had a wonderful winter vacation. I traveled with my parents to visit my grandparents. We played games together and spent a lot of time talking about my schoolwork. They were proud of me and our time together was very special.
However, I’m going to do something different this winter vacation. First of all, I will study harder than before because I want to make great progress in all subjects next term, especially in English. I am weak in English listening. I’ll listen to the English radio program every day to improve my listening skills. Besides, I’d like to volunteer some time to visit the sick kids in the local hospital to cheer them up. I’m good at singing and dancing so I can put this love to good use by playing with them.
I’m sure I’ll have a busy but colorful winter vacation.

W:  I am. I had a bad morning.
M:  Really? What happened?
W:  Well, first of all I overslept. By the time I got up, my brother had already gotten in the shower.
M:  Oh, what a pain!
W:  So, after he got out of the shower, I took a quick shower and got dressed. But by the time I went outside, the bus had already left.
M:  Oh, no!
W:  Oh, yes! So I ran all the way to school. But when I got to school, I realized I had left my backpack at home.
M:  No wonder you look stressed out.

W:  In Germany by Mr Daimler and Mr Benz.
M:  That’s right. Congratulations, Marianne. You did very well.

听下面一段短文,回答第16--18小题。
It is clear that sleep is necessary to everyone. If we don’t sleep enough, we feel tired.
Each night we have two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives our body the rest that it needs, and prepares us for active sleep, in which dreaming appears. In passive sleep, the body is at rest. The heart slows down. We move very little. And the brain becomes very inactive. If a person continues to sleep, the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in the brain increases, the body becomes very, very still, and the brain goes from being inactive to being active. And as the brain becomes more active, the eyes begin to move rapidly. When the eyes begin to move, this is a sign of another change---the change is that a person is dreaming.
Throughout the night, a person usually dreams for about one and a half hours. Many people say that they don’t dream, or that they rarely dream. Doctors have studied the sleep and have found that everyone dreams--- in fact, every person needs to dream in order to keep healthy. It appears we need passive sleep in order to rest our bodies. We need active sleep in order to rest our brains.

Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. I am John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 10 weeks. This is one of the popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered, the room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way. Knowing the rules will help you master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why this class is so popular.
